Is iPhone photography a bit like cheating?

Ever since I downloaded Cameramatic, I've become a bit obsessed with my iPhone. I want to take pictures of everything. Well, I always want to take pictures of everything, but the iPhone apps transform the most boring subjects into ... dare, I say ... art?! Which leads me to wonder ... is iPhone photography using apps like Cameramatic or Hipstamatic or {insert picture taking iPhone app in here} a bit like cheating?

Unless it's the weekend, my opportunities to photograph are generally limited to my drive in to work and back from work, therefore, the road is becoming a familiar subject and I'm starting to notice and work with the colors, the signs, the traffic patterns, the birds on a wire. I used the 60 hex for the 1st and last image and the 50 Zeiss Sonnar for the 2nd image.

I'm getting a taste of what the world must be like for a child (and yeah, you can infer from that statement that I don't remember my own discovery of the world as a child). I find myself looking around with amazement and delight at the newness of most things that surround me. So many new things to explore and discover ... new roads, new house designs, new lifestyles. We had a beautiful sunny crisp day and I decided to make a quick stop at Lake Elkhorn during my lunch break. I expected to find a deserted site, but instead I ran into lots of people who were there walking, walking their dogs, walking their babies, running, having their lunch. What an awesome little trip!

Annapolis is quickly becoming one of my favorite places to visit. Every time I visit I can not help but feel like I've been transported in space and I'm in some Northern European city. It's always so full of life, streets are lined with restaurants with outdoor seating, there are people (and dogs) everywhere, the buildings are reminiscent of Europe, there's water and boats ... it's so much fun! And this time we even found a fabulous restaurant ... Osteria 177. We'll most definitely be back. All pictures were taken with the Leica M9 and 35 Summicron.

It's a wonderful world

I've been marveling at the Fall color on my drives to/from work for a couple of weeks. Whether on a sunny day, overcast or rainy day, I've been mesmerized by the incredible display of color. My amazement may be due to the fact that the whole area is new to me, or it may be because we didn't get much of a Fall in Louisiana. The lesson for me is that even beautiful things are not easy to photograph, and I'm happy to have been able to get a couple today that I feel I can share with the world. :)

Georgetown - Worldwide Photo Walk (black-and-white)

I own a couple of books by Scott Kelby, but that's not why I joined the Kelby photo walk today. I thought it would be fun to get together with a group of photographers and explore an area of DC I had never seen before: Georgetown! I didn't do so well on the getting together part as very quickly I decided to move at my own pace which was faster than everybody else; it also appeared I was the only street photographer in the group. But the route was wonderful, and I enjoyed following it. Georgetown is so charming with its beautiful streets, gorgeous houses, historic landmarks, breathtaking views of the Potomac river, glitzy shops, and fancy restaurants. I can't wait to go back.

There is a butterfly conservatory in my new backyard and also an amazing botanical garden. I'm sure I'll spend hours taking photographs in there in the coming months and years. Saying Goodbye - Houmas House

Le Marais is my favorite arrondisment so far. It's what I expected Paris to feel and look like ... narrow streets lined with boutique stores and restaurants, quite a few tourists which is to be expected, but not overwhelmingly touristy like all the other places we've seen. It was a beautiful sunny day and we wandered around for several hours. Our favorite stop was in the garden Louis XIV, by Palace de Vosges.

Paris, Day 3 - Louvre, Champs Elisee, Arc de Triomphe & Tour Eiffel

Our first stop today was at the Louvre. Not much to say about it other than that it was crowded and oh yeah ... magnifique. I was most enthralled with the glass pyramids:

On the long stroll towards Arc de Triomphe we made a few stops alongside Seine to take in the view:

Champs Elisee was lined up with restaurants, big name stores, and ... the Abercrombie & Fitch boys. :)

We ran into a couple getting married at the Arc de Triomphe

And from there it was a direct walk to Tour Eiffel (after a stop for a late lunch)

Our first metro ride was quick and uneventful and once again it was an opportunity for a little photography

Paris, day 2 - Notre Dame, Pantheon, Jardin du Luxembourg

Our day started with a stop at Cathedrale Notre-Dame. As we were making our way towards our next stop which was Jardin du Luxembourg, we ran into the Pantheon which was just breathtaking, especially the 360 degree view of Paris from the top:

Mississippi rising

Mississippi has been rising and causing areas to flood along the way. It is not expected to rise above the levees here in Baton Rouge, but given our house is less than a mile away from the river, it's a bit unsettling. I was in the downtown area and was a little surprised at how many people were out and about, taking pictures of the river and generally just watching the river this evening. When I saw this bride rushing up the levee, I knew I had the picture I was looking for.

We have this ritual ... as soon as I head over to take a bath, Calista follows. She waits patiently on the side of the bathtub while the tub fills with water. As soon as I turn off the water, she stretches, walks over to the middle of the tub, puts a paw on the step down, then the second paw, and takes a few sips. Over the years, I've tried to discourage her from drinking the water using all sorts of methods, but as any cat people know, cats are relentless. She wins. I now simply wait until she's done before I use any soap.

A house from another time

I drive by this house in the downtown area every week on my way in to spin. I've been wanting to photograph it for ages, and today was the day. The tree growing inside the small courtyard, the wind chimes, the green ivy growing around as well as inside the windows, the old green paint, it's all very mysterious and intriguing.

A boy and his toy

I saw the boy in the pictures below, but before I could take a proper picture of him, he turned around and took off. I thought he was upset with me taking his picture, but a few seconds later he re-appeared with a sweet smile on his face proudly holding his big stuffed rabbit toy. The American City (1)

Brian and I went downtown last weekend and had lunch at a nice sushi restaurant with a beautiful view of the river. It wasn't until we left and were walking to our car that it hit me ... we are in downtown Baton Rouge and there isn't a single person on the street. The city looked surreal, it looked like an abandoned city. At the same time everything was shiny, and restaurants were boasting the big 'open' neon signs.

Over the last week I've become increasingly aware of just how 'vacant' the city looks and thought of many other American cities I've visited that look exactly the same. The only action you see are the cars - and there are plenty of them! If you want to see people, go shopping, eat out, or socialize in the office at work.

Here's a glimpse into what the downtown looked like between 1:00pm and 2:00pm earlier today, and oh yea, I had to wait to get the few people I did get in my shots.

I ordered my 60mm Hexanon from Japan last week and was not expecting it for another few days. To my surprise it arrived 4 days after I ordered it!!! I felt like a kid in a candy store all day yesterday and photographed ... everything. The lens is just as magical as people have described it. It has that classic look wide open and it gets super sharp from 1.4 forward.

According to wikipedia, the name Mărțișor is the diminutive of marț, Martie, in modern Romanian, and it means "little March". It is a celebration of the beginning of Spring, and an opportunity for ladies of all ages to get small little decorations tied on red and white strings from those who love them. Breaking the rules

I usually stay within the "rules" of photography composition: thirds, "S" lines, fill the frame, clear subject, normal as opposed to skewed perspective, so on and so forth. But today I wanted to try something different. Whenever I look at a photograph that breaks the rules, if it's done well, I react to it strongly. So I thought I'd do a little experimentation of my own.

Vrindavan is a small town in the Mathura district of Uttar Pradesh, India and it is the region where Lord Krishna spent his childhood days. All the pictures were taken with the Leica M9 + 50 Summilux f/1.4

The defining event of the stay in Vrindavan however, was meeting Sri 1008 Hanuman Das Maharaj said to be 140 years old.

We leave New Delhi behind and travel for the next several hours to Jaipur. I am fascinated by all the trucks on the road, the beautiful colors, paintings of flowers, birds, wings on the trucks and the ever-present 'Blow Horn - OK'! Use Dipper at Night.
